Id say its because of 19th century represents a massive paradigm shift from an old, more agriculture-based form of life into an industrialized, more technologically based world that not only resulted in massive layoffs but also created deep sense of alienation and estrangement. Too much was happening too fast that a lot of people simply couldn't adapt and hence chose to end their lives.
