U.S. Midwestern states are typically states that were apart of the Louisiana Purchase. Midwestern states also use waterways as a large source of transportation. The Mississippi river and the Great Lakes have been important to the Midwest's development. Culturally, the Midwest remains the biggest melting pot for Protestantism and Calvinism.
