The answer would be Epics reflect the value of a culture. The hero in the epic is always the quintessential man. He is strong and brave and seeks adventure to better himself and his people. All men must strive to be like the epic hero. The monster in the epic is the representation of the other; the thing that no man must ever be. They are often grotesque, break the rules, defy taboos and inferior.
