A thesis statement is the main claim that an essay tries to prove. The thesis statement describes, in one sentence, the main idea of an author about a particular topic. In this case, if the thesis statement discusses the negative effects on immigration, it is likely to argue against immigration. Such a thesis statement might look something like this:
"Immigration can increase crime rates, cause conflict among different ethnic populations and dilute the local culture."
