how do you know which terms to combine and which terms not to combine​

You know when for example they have the same variable or if there is no variable then you could combine them.For example, if it is 3x and 5x you could combine it to get 8x but if it is like 3x and 2y, you can’t combine it since it doesn’t have the same variable
