This is not a math question. It's a biology question.

ADP stands for Adenosine diphosphate
ATP stands for 
Adenosine triphosphate

ADP has only 2 phosphate ions while ATP has 3.

ADP + pi = ATP

pi stands for phosphate ion.

2pi + pi = 3pi
