let x = that number

x * (x - 8) = -15

xx  - 8x + 15 = 0

xx -  3x  - 5x + 15 = 0

x(x - 3) - 5(x - 3) = 0

(x - 5)(x - 3) = 0

then x = 5 or  x = 3
