In a class of 72 pupils, the ratio of passes to failures in the final exam was 8:1. How many pupils passed the exam?

72 total pupils
8x passed the test, x did not
8x + x = 72
9x = 72
x = 8

So since 8x passed the test, substitute 8 for x
8(8) = 64

64 pupils passed the exam
