Atoms can gain, lose, or share electrons during a chemical change. why doesn't this cause atoms' identities to change?

Atoms bond to gain, lose, or share their valence electrons in order to complete and have a stable outer energy level. Only the amount of electrons is changed and the atom still has the same protons, neutrons, and other properties.
