Independent variable is independent, ,which is usually x, and doesn't depend on the numbers. So like if I am watering the plants, the amount of water I give the plants in independent, and the height of the plant is DEPENDENT because it rely's on the amount of water given to grow. Controlled variable is unchanged, you never experiment on this one.
