It's pretty much just a movement of valuing human life. During the Renaissance, people would put so much emphasis on religion and unworldly things instead of human potential and what was physically in front of us. Humanism led people to realize that humans could achieve great things in the world and that we shouldn't completely revolve our lives around religion and religious figures like the Pope.
