The factors used mostly by geologists to discern between different types of mass movements include; the type of material involved (rock or regolith) the velocity of movement (slow, intermediate or fast), the character of the moving mass (coherent, chaotic, wet or dry), the environment in which movement takes place (subaerial or submarine).
